ABOUT

Hello, My name is Nancy. I started this website because I love Alaska Books. Alaska has a rich literary tradition. There are thousands of books about Alaska or by Alaskan authors. The Alaska genre of books is also called “Alaskana” books which is the name of a wonderful but now closed Alaska bookstore. This website categories Alaska books into about a dozen sub genres. It will have lists and reviews and blog posts and (hopefully) author interviews.

I moved to Alaska in 1991 for a temporary job but, like many other “outsiders,” ended up staying. I was a “cheechako” but now I am a “sourdough.” My residency here is long enough (because it is a relatively new state) that I now qualify to join one of the local Igloos of the Pioneers of Alaska club. http://www.pioneersofalaska.org/. I have lived in Ketchikan (in Southeast), Barrow (in the Arctic), Eagle River and Anchorage, and now the Mat-Su Valley (in SouthCentral). I have also travelled all over Alaska (for work and vacation) and up and down the Alcan.

I have been buying and collecting Alaska books for many years. I buy most of my books at local bookstores and thrift stores as well as online. I have met many Alaskan authors over the years either at book signings or just through the community.

My favorite Alaska genres are: Adventure and Homesteading; Memoirs; and Cookbooks.
